At Coast Plaza Hospital, Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatments are done on an inpatient or outpatient basis, depending on the circumstances. You will be assessed prior to each treatment by our trained hyperbaric physicians and technologists. During treatment, you will wear a gown of 100% cotton while lying in a climate-controlled acrylic chamber approximately seven feet long and 30 inches in diameter. The chamber is filled with 100% oxygen to a pressure equivalent to 45 – 66 feet of sea water. This pressure creates a fullness in the ears, which you will equalize easily, as instructed prior to treatment.

Most conditions require a series of treatments for maximum effect. Each treatment is performed over a two hour period. During the first fifteen minutes, the chamber is somewhat noisy and warm. However, conditions in the chamber improve once the prescribed depth is reached, and you will be able to pass the remaining time watching television, listening to music, or simply relaxing.

Complications

Hyperbaric therapy has few complications. Occasionally, patients experience visual changes and become more nearsighted during treatment. In most cases, this vision change is temporary and problems disappear three to four months after treatment is complete.

Preparation

Because safety is a primary concern, we ask that you do not smoke during the course of your Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. Smoking causes blood vessels to constrict and even one cigarette can have a negative impact, causing the tissue to suffocate. Do not bring any of the following items into the chamber:

• Vaseline or Petroleum Products
• Hairsprays or Oils
• Aftershave, Cologne or Perfume
• Make-up or Lipstick
• Watches
• Ointments, Salves or Liniments
• Hearing Aids or Ear Plugs
• Hard Contact Lenses
• Smoking Material (Including Lighters)
• Newspapers or Loose Paper

Coast Plaza’s commitment to advanced technology allows us to provide our patients with state-of-the-art healing and wound care treatment in the comfort of a private, non-rushed environment.
