Most people know when a health problem is serious enough to be considered an emergency. Any trauma involving the head, neck or spine, extreme loss of blood, or unconsciousness should be addressed by a physician at the earliest opportunity. However, many people are reluctant to visit the ER when experiencing signs of physical distress that may be potentially life-threatening. When dealing with signs of stroke, heart attack, or internal organ damage, any delay in receiving proper healthcare can have serious consequences.

It’s time to call 911 or go to the Emergency Department if you experience or observe:

• Chest Pain or Pressure
• Radiating Pain in the Left Arm or Neck
• Severe Abdominal Pain
• Sudden, Severe Headache
• Car Accident with Head, Neck or Spine Injury
• Seizures
• Fainting, Weakness or Persistent Dizziness
• Changes in Vision
• Confusion
• Obstetrical Problems (Bleeding)
• Overdose
• Suspected Poisoning
• Psychiatric Disorders with Violent Tendencies
• Suspected Child Abuse
• Assault, Including Sexual Assault
• Injuries

Other conditions may require emergency treatment, and certain personal factors should be considered, such as age, allergies, and overall health status. If you have previously been diagnosed with a serious chronic illness, ED doctors agree that it is best to err on the side of caution. If you have any doubts whatsoever, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department without delay.

Most insurers, including Medicare, cover Emergency Department visits.

If you have questions or concerns about a healthcare emergency, contact the Emergency Department at (562) 868-3751, extension 2180.
